The Primary School
In the primary classes (Std. I to IV), 'Direct Experience' is the basis for all learning. Spontaneous activities of children provide the natural condition for the growth of knowledge. ‘Learning by doing’ approach based on the child’s needs and interests paves the way for the project method of teaching.
The curriculum in the primary school is organized according to the fourfold interests of the child in conversation, inquiry, construction and artistic expression. The curriculum is used to develop critical discrimination and reasoning ability in children in the mathematics laboratory. The focus on the child’s counting and reckoning skills leads to the development of primary mathematics. The importance of sound, form and number in each area of experience is emphasized, giving the child the opportunity to learn the foundational aspects of all subjects.
All the qualities of an intelligent citizen of a democracy, like initiative, independence and resourcefulness are developed in children. Importance is given to observation thus preparing the way for the development of a scientific temper. The child is introduced to the great world of reality, spontaneously and joyfully. Periodic field trips to nature parks, conservation centers and eco friendly destinations help to develop skills and values of love, concern and preservation of the flora, fauna and natural resources. Outbound education starts from Class III. Dance and music form an integral part of the curriculum in primary school education. |
